Ontario's Green Commercial Vehicle Program (GCVP)
As part of Ontario's Go Green Action Plan, money available through the GCVP is being allocated to various anti-idle technologies, as well as hybrid and alternative-fuel technologies. Of the $15 million set aside for commercial vehicles, only $2.9 million is earmarked for idle-reduction devices. The province says it may vary those amounts, at its discretion, based on policy or program considerations.
Grant applications are now available, and OBAC is urging Ontario based owner-operators who want to take advantage of the program to file their application forms with the Ministry of Transportation as quickly as they can. To see OBAC press release, click here.
GCVP Grant Program Details
- Ontario-based owners of Class 8 vehicles (fleets and owner-operators) can qualify for grants of approximately one-third of the purchase price of an APU, or a cab or coolant heater. Successful candidates will be required to report the number of hours the device was used over a one-year period.
- Applicants must be Ontario-based and must run at least 20 percent of their miles in that province, and have a CVOR rating of excellent, satisfactory, or satisfactory unaudited, or a "good" commercial vehicle driver's safety record.
- The following vehicles qualify under the terms of the GCVP:
- Class 8 vehicles used to transport freight, goods, or service, but not passengers, and not be a utility vehicle;
- Be compliant with all CMVSS standards;
- Be registered in the province of Ontario; and
- Be a 2005 or newer model-year truck.
- Grants are available for up to 33% of the capital cost of an eligible anti-idling device, excluding the cost of installation, to a maximum of:
- $3,100 for an auxiliary power unit (APU)
- $1,000 for a cab heater
- $1,000 for a cab cooler
- Individual applicants will be limited over the life of the program to $350,000 for eligible anti-idle technologies.
- Successful candidates will be required to report usage of the product to the Ministry by tracking the number of hours recorded on a meter installed on the device. These readings would be taken at installation and again at two subsequent annual vehicle inspection events. The reading would be forwarded to the Ministry, and logged for GHG reduction tracking purposes.
- The Ministry will accept GCVP applications until February 28, 2010.
