Ice Road Trucker Makes His Way to Nova Scotia to Help Raise Money for Special Olympics Truck Convoy!
Special Olympics Nova Scotia is honored to announce that ice road trucker Alex Deborgoski will join the World’s Largest Truck Convoy this year as convoy marshal. Nova Scotia’s third annual convoy will take place on September 20, 2014 and travel to and from CFB Shearwater through the streets of Dartmouth, Cole Harbour, and Eastern Passage.
Described as “John Wayne driving a truck,” Alex Deborgoski is the original ice road trucker. He has shot seven seasons of the Emmy-nominated Ice Road Truckers and recently wrapped shooting on season eight. The show is one of the network’s most successful TV series and is seen in 180 countries. “Travelling to Nova Scotia to help support a charity that does so much good in their community is an honor. Add to it the opportunity to meet and speak with fellow truckers is a win/win. I am truly looking forward to this event and am dedicated to helping make it a success in any way I can,” says Deborgoski.
It’s about more than just trucks and loud horns.
“Truckers understand, from their long hours on the road, the importance of friends and family,” says Anne Marie Shannon, Director of Events and Communications for Special Olympics Nova Scotia. “When truckers get together, amazing things can happen. As an organization, we have a lot of important work in our future plans, and this annual event helps raise much-needed funds.” The event currently raises money through registrations and pledges, but this year’s participation of Deborgoski offers unique sponsorship opportunities that should see pledges grow, according to Shannon.

About Alex
While it was luck that presented this job to him when he was a young man in need of making more money, Alex is so much more than just an “ice road trucker.” He is an entrepreneur, a gold and diamond miner, a contractor, a maker of topsoil and a collector of over 150 vehicles including a Zamboni! The father of 11 and grandfather of 13, Alex is opinionated, passionate, articulate, and intelligent. He regularly writes articles for the local Yellowknife, NWT newspaper on topics of interest to him. He also speaks to groups, conferences and conventions around the world where he patiently signs autographs and meets with the legions of fans who want to know more about the man behind the wheel. Before Ice Road Truckers, Alex appeared on the first season of IRT Deadliest Roads and is known around the world because of IRT’s global distribution. He has now done about 100 episodes of the show and is recognized everywhere he goes thanks to his easy smile, great laugh and depth of knowledge on a variety of subjects.
