Transport Canada Proposes Home-grown ELD rule, Comments Requested
OTTAWA, DECEMBER 18, 2017 -- Canada put forth a home-grown draft ELD proposal on December 18, 2017, and the comment period will remain open until February 18, 2018. Interested parties have 60 days from the day the proposal was published in Canada Gazette Part 1. Once the rule is finalized, the roll-out is expected to be sometime in early 2020. The draft rule that was published last month will apply only to federally regulated motor carriers. It will be up to individual provinces and territories to decide if they will bring in similar legislation apply to intra-provincial carriers, that is, carriers that never leave provincial boundaries.
Much has been written about the potential impact of ELD on fleet and driver operations, and there is no shortage of opinions on the matter, one way or the other. Now is the time to share your opinions in a way that matters. Transport Canada is accepting comments on the draft proposal, and anyone can comment. Your opinion matters, so take some time to review to the proposal and offer your thoughts on the matter. Admittedly, it's pretty dense reading, and at the end of it, you'll find that the Canadian proposal pretty well mirrors the U.S. rule that went into effect on December 18 -- the same day Canada announced its draft regulation.
